Disaster Risk Reduction:
Disaster Risks & Hazards,
70% of all disasters are now related to climate change based extreme weather events. Learn how to design a Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction program to protect livelihoods and save lives.
What? An 8 week, self-paced training program where you will each continue improving your development project. Each one of the assignments will be a concrete step in preparing your project for launch and eventual community takeover. By the end of the 8 weeks, you will have developed a participatory mapping of disaster risks, hazards, assets and community capacity, and then consulted with a DRR training expert to develop a participatory DRR training process for a Disaster Risk Reduction Program.
Learn by doing.
The solutions that students have been developing include designing a community-based water use management plan. Community members will first assess their disaster related risks, hazards, vulnerabilities and capacities, and then consult with a DRR expert to develop a participatory process and training program for launching the DRR plan.
How? A dual approach will be used in this course:
1. The course will lead you through the continued development of your project by working closely with and engaging community members.
2. For long-term sustainability you will consult with a DRR expert to develop a participatory process and training program for developing the DRR plan.
Who should take this course?
1. This course is perfect for nonprofit and development professionals working in areas such as food security, watershed management, agriculture, the environment, sustainable development, or DRR—and who want to develop practitioner-level skills. If you are a grant writer, nonprofit staff member, consultant, project manager—or an executive director—you will develop real skills mastery.
2. This course is just as relevant to a person considering a career transition into the development world and wanting to develop employable skills.
8 Weeks: Make the project sustainable and have long-term impact.
Week 1. Design a participatory capacity and vulnerability analysis.
Week 2. Community workshop on participatory capacity and vulnerability.
Week 3.Organize a community based disaster risk reduction committee.
Week 4. Activities for use before disasters strike.
